The Roads Authority has said the construction of Zomba-Jali-Phalombe-Chitakale road will resume soon.

Government canceled construction contracts for the road in December 2014 due to the first contractor’s under performance.

Spokesperson Portia Kajanga says the construction of the road which has been funded by Malawi government, Kuwait Fund and other institutions will resume this year.

“Indeed the Zomba-Jali-Phalombe Chitakale road construction is starting soon and the construction has been funded by the Malawi government and other institutions,” said Kajanga.

She added that the construction of the road ceased in the past because they had problems but now people must have hope that the road will be completed.

According to Kajanga, the 102 Km road will be completed after 1 year 8 months. The Zomba-Jali-Phalombe Chitakale starts at Zomba Air Wing through Jali, Misewu Folo, Phalombe and ends at Chitakale.

The construction of the road began in 2005 and was expected to be completed in 2013.

Government blamed the contractor, a foreign based construction company, for the delay and terminated the contract.

When completed, the road is expected to ease mobility and accessibility to and from areas of social economic activities.

It will also enhance tourism since it ends right at the foot of Mulanje Mountain.
