‘MPs can stay where they want’

One of the political analysts in the country says there is no need for all Members of Parliament (MPs) to be residing in Lilongwe as other people earlier suggested.

MPs could live anywhere.

MPs could live anywhere.

Recently, some analysts proposed that the MPs should be staying in Lilongwe so that government should not be spending a lot of money by giving them accommodation allowances when there is a parliamentary session.

But the political analyst, Latin Matenje, said the call is reasonable in an economic point of view but in a democratic society it is wrong.

“The call is valid economically but a democratic society it is invalid as everyone has the right to stay where they please,” said Matenje.

He added that if the legislators move to Lilongwe, people would be deprived of regularly meeting their representatives hence the constituents will fail to deliver their grievances.

  1. We must review MPs conditions of service. Which book do we refer to here? I know civil servants have own Public Service Regulations MPSR book one to something like a four or five. It is difficult to comment on hearsay. We need full information on regulatory and reference material.

  6. Just leave them to stay wherever they want, because the transport allowance is for once in a while. and I know if you dare push them to reside in Lilongwe village town; the money they will be claiming for Housing allowances will be on a monthly basis, and this will create a big hole where tax money will be draining, than what is spent for transport.

  21. Lilongwe based or home based it doesn’t change anything. We still have a long way to go, until when MPs will learn to be honourables.
