Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Thyolo Thava, Lifred Nawena has faulted the Malawi Police Service (MPS) for the increase in cases of mob justice in the country.

According to Nawena, Malawians do not trust the Malawi police due to the fact that some of the police officers are also involved in corruption cases.

He said most of the Malawi police officers are not honest enough as before, a development which he said has led to the rise of cases of mob justice in the country.

Nawena further added that Malawians are angry with MPS and that is why they are granting themselves the powers to punish criminals since the thugs are not given stiff punishments when they are brought before the court of law.

“Am saying our police service must learn to be honest. The justice system and the laws of the country need a major overhaul. We need stiff punishment to people committing serious cases.”

“So I think this behaviour can easily end with the enactment of the new law and I think this can reflect order of the day,” said Nawena.

Nawena’s remarks come barely a day after angry people in Kanjedza in the commercial city of Blantyre burnt to death a man for stealing a handbag and two smart phones
