Police restless over Mangochi District Council robbery

Police officers in Mangochi district are spending sleepless nights after unknown robbers armed with guns broke into the the district’s  council offices where they went away with assorted property including computers and credentials for officials at the council.

According to Mangochi Police spokesperson Rodrick Maida, the gang which comprised 12 men  invaded the council offices on the midnight of Thursday.

PoliceDuring its operation, the gang broke into 10 offices, including the District Commissioner’s office and stole K473,000 cash, K24,000 worth of airtime vouchers, five laptops, one laptop bag and Master’s and Bachelor’s degree certificates in Public Administration belonging to the District Commissioner  [Jack Nguluwe] and four promotion letters.

Maida said: “After this they shot in the air several times to scare the community before stealing a Toyota Hilux twin cab registration 018 MG 033 belonging to the youth department.”

The criminals later dumped the vehicle at Nansenga along the Mangochi-Katema road.

Meanwhile the Mangochi council is yet to state the value of the stolen items.

Police have since said that they are working tirelessly to track down the thieves.

According to police, the 12 would answer charges of theft which is contrary to Section 301 of the Penal Code.

Just recently, thieves also stole at Thyolo District Education Offices before other criminals caused the same stir at Phalombe District Council.
