PrisonReports reaching Malawi24 show that seven prisoners have today escaped from Mangochi Prison.

According to Mangochi prison officer in charge Jonas Chimoto, the prisoners escaped between wee hours of one to two o’clock on Sunday using a channel that they had dug at the toilet.

Chimoto added that the channel led a way out of the prison and they dug it using an old axe and knife.

The seven escapees are believed to have been led by two notorious criminals who are answering murder charges.

The remaining prisoners said they were afraid to to alert the warders on duty since the escapees threatened to kill the remaining prisoners if they dared to shout.

Meanwhile, the police have launched a manhunt for the inmates.
