The Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has expressed concern over the increase in theft of water board pipes in the commercial city.

According to Blantyre Water Board (BWB) spokesperson, Priscilla Mateyu, the board receives reports on a daily basis from its customers in the city that they are failing to have continuous water supply which she said is as a result of theft.

She said the development is high in areas such as Chileka, Bangwe and Ndirande where customers of the board steal the boards equipment deliberately with the aim of accessing free water and also to use the equipment at their house for making different things such as hoes, pangas.

However, Mateyu said since the genesis of theft in October last year, the police have not yet arrested any suspect in connection to the matter.

The spokesperson continued by accusing Chatha residents for the increased thefts.

“There is this one area in the city called Chatha in Chileka where the development is high. The area is giving us more troubles. Pipes in this area are deliberately broken and stolen just for free water and other reasons,” said Mateyu.

Mateyu added that the theft of the pipes is affecting distribution of water in the city saying they are spending more money on the very same issue instead of using the funds for other things.

She then appealed to the general public to report to the police if they see anyone stealing BWB equipment.

Meanwhile, the Southern region Water Board through its spokesperson Macdonald Phiri has since assured all its customers of good services from the board saying the region is receiving good rainfall which will enable it to supply water regularly.
