The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has shifted the date for the kick-off of the Presidential Cup by a week from March 5 to 12.

The Malawi FA confirmed the development in a Facebook post which was posted on its official page, saying that the cup will not be kicking off this weekend but on 12 March.

FAM has also extended the registration deadline for the Presidential Cup at district level from the 28th of February to the 5th of March 2016.

Earlier this month, FAM’s competitions manager Gomegzani Zakazaka said only 32 team will be allowed to register in this year’s presidential competition at district level since registration started a bit late. The registration fee is pegged at K10000 per team.

This means that the cup, which will run up to 30th June this year, is open to all teams starting at district level.

All the district champions will join four top regional teams that will qualify to be drawn with the Super League teams for the national level.

Mighty Wanderers were the first team to win the cup in 2009 after beating Escom United 3-2 on penalties at Kamuzu stadium in Blantyre. Nyasa Big Bullets, Civo United and Mafco are some of the teams that have won the cup before.

Currently, Mafco are the cup holders and they won it in 2013 after beating Silver Strikers 9 -8 on post-match penalties.
