A bandwagon of Malawi’s former ruling People’s Party (PP) governors has joined the fired northern region provincial chairperson Christopher Mzomera Ngwira in endorsing Khumbo Kachali as interim president of the party.

Ngwira was fired from PP for proposing that the party should be led by Kachali following the absence of the party’s president Joyce Banda since 2014.

Speaking to the local press, one of PP’s governors, Daniel Kaipa who is governor for Kasungu central, said Kachali should take leadership of the orange camp.

“The voice of the grassroots must be addressed, people need someone who can lead the party and in this case it is Khumbo Kachali who was fully elected at the party’s convention,” said Kaipa.

Kaipa further blasted the party vice president Uladi Mussa’s decision to fire Ngwira as provincial chairperson in the northern region.

Concurring with Kaipa, Ngwira said Kachali has leadership skills arguing that he has experience of politics in Malawi.

“I know Kachali as a person who has a lot of experience in Malawian politics, he has been there before us and he has power to unite people because he has worked with different people from all three regions,” said Ngwira.

However, PP spokesperson Ken Msonda continues downplaying reports of a leadership vacuum in the party.
