Fisd Wizards hopes of surviving the chop in Malawi’s top tier league were on Sunday handed a severe blow after Azam Tigers beat them 1-0 at the Kamuzu Stadium.

Bright Munthali scored the only goal in the second half of the game to ensure Tigers’ first maximum points in the second round of Malawi’s elite league. Azam Tigers had the first clear chance to break the deadlock through Peter Katsonga who blasted his shot over the bar with only the keeper to beat in the 6th minute of the first half .

A few minutes later, Fisd Wizards could have also broken the deadlock but Mike Mkwate’s excellent shot went straight into the hands of Vincent Kankhobwe, the Azam Tigers goal minder.

20 minutes into the first half Azam Tigers could have have taken the lead through Bright Munthali but his bullet header was denied by the upright pole with the Fisd Wizards goalkeeper already beaten.

After that miss, Azam Tigers continued dominating possession as Patrick Thupi was setting his strikers well but Fisd Wizards defended tirelesly and denied Azam from taking the lead.

As the first half was going to an end, Fisd Wizards could have scored through Azam Tigers midfielder Yamikani Chester who deflected the ball towards his own net but luckily for him it went over the bar and the first half ended goalless.

Come second half, both sides came in with fresh ideas but it was Fisd Wizards who could have scored first through Levison Maganizo however, his shot was well saved by Kankhobwe.

15 minutes into the second half Azam Tigers broke the deadlock after the Fisd Wizards goal minder Brighton Munthali was well beaten by Azam Tigers striker Bright Munthali’s excellent shot. After that goal, Azam Tigers increased the pace and pressurised Fisd as they were in search of a second goal of the game. Yamikani Chester saw his shot go over the cross bar while Bright Munthali’s also headed over the bar. 5 minutes later Azam Tigers could have scored another goal but Chester’s shot was only denied by the right goal post in the 75th minute.

Peter Mponda’s side nearly scored an equalising goal in the dying minutes of the second half but Isaac Mwale blasted his shot marginally wide and the game ended 1-0 in favour of Tigers.

Azam Tigers registered their first win of the second round in Malawi’s elite league whereas Fisd Wizards’ chances of surviving the chop were dented a severe blow.

Fisd Wizards are still anchoring the log table and they are now remaining with Mighty Wanderers, Big Bullets and Blue Eagles to wind up their season.
