Reports reaching Malawi24 from South Africa indicate that a Malawian woman from Mzimba district has been killed together with her child on her way to South Africa where they were heading to search for greener pastures.

Mzimba immigration publicist Lordwell Chizumila has confirmed this in an interview but he asked for time to give more information on the whole tragedy.

However other sources alleged that the two met their fate after a transporter who carried them dumped them on their way and they might have been killed by some gangsters.

It is said that they used unknown transporters who just pick people from Malawi to SA illegally and they usually subject them to a variety of abuses on their way.

crime (2)“Especially women, they sometimes screw them on their way to South Africa. I have seen that with my own eyes a transporter easing his libido on a woman by threatening her that he will dump her if she insists,” said our source. The news has shocked gender equality and women empowerment (GEWE) facilitators who have branded the woman’s death as untimely and scary.

Coordinator of the grouping Layman Kaira told our reporter in an interview that they have learnt the news with great shock considering the fact that the world is commemorating 16 days of gender activism. “We have statistics which shows that Mzimba is one of the districts where women and children are facing a variety of violations.

“As an organisation we will map ways to eradicate such malpractices,” said Kaira.

Malawi24 understands that the tragedy has also shaken Mzimba district council officials who have confirmed of scheduling an indaba to discuss how they can make sure such incidences do not recur.

Thomas Munthali who spoke on behalf of the district commissioner for Mzimba maintained that the incident has scared many people in the district including council officials thus worth an indaba that will highlight some possible ways to deal with such tragedies.

“We are organising an indaba to be held soon on the same story. As council we are saddened with the news,” said Munthali.

Mzimba is among districts in Malawi where many people like flocking to South Africa to secure themselves good jobs.
