At a time when the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is accusing government of not putting matters of locals at heart, the party has been criticized of being greedy and hypocritical.

This follows media revelations that Speaker of the National Assembly Richard Msowoya, who is also Veep of MCP and its leader Lazarus Chakwera who heads opposition parties in the August house, have been demanding luxurious pays and vehicles from the National Assembly.

According to a report carried by the Daily Times last week, Msowoya is using a Toyota Land cruiser V8 which cost about K96 million while Chakwera together with two deputy speakers have been using Toyota Prado VXs costing K80 million each.

Chakwera and Msowoya hit headlines for fueling luxurious spending.

However, this comes when the opposition has been railing against President Peter Mutharika for blowing millions of money with his controversial entourage at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

In response, Msowoya hinted that they cannot be walking hence the official vehicles were needed.

Msowoya also argued that the vehicles were bought last year and it is unfortunate that government is angry with the purchase.

Following the news, Malawi24 has been following debates on social media and it shows the MCP is has invited the wrath of Malawians on the basis that the news shows that the opposition party fails to live the talk.

Vic Mandiwe, a Facebook user, questioned the whole essence of the MCP turning its ire on Mutharika when its leaders are actually failing to set an example.

“It’s so disheartening how MCP President Lazarus Chakwera and his vice who also happens to be a leader of opposition can have the audacity to spend a whooping MK300 Million on just four vehicles. With this single act, they have lost moral ground to stand and criticise vision-less Mutharika government. It’s high time we offloaded all useless politicians, they have nothing new to offer,” Mandiwe wrote in one of the Facebook posts that have ignited debate on the matter.

Some Malawians have since branded Chakwera and the MCP as ‘hypocrites’
