…Kasambara ‘forcefully’ implicated
In the ongoing probe into the Cashgate scandal, jailed Oswald Lutepo has confessed in court that he was given money by former Malawi leader, Joyce Banda, meant to fund John Tembo’s campaign at the 2013 Malawi Congress Party (MCP) convention.
Lutepo made the confession in court hours ago during the continuation of the attempted murder case of former Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo at Lilongwe High Court.
According to Lutepo, who is still in jail serving his 11-year term for theft and money laundering linked to the Cashgate scandal, Banda had asked him to make the payments to Tembo ahead of the 2014 polls before the former MCP leader was barred from contesting at the party convention.
He says the money amounted to over K10 Million.
Among other notable revelations, Lutepo whose theft of MK4 billion landed him in jail told then president Banda on 14 September, 2013 that Mphwiyo had been shot, just a day after the actual incident.
He has also admitted knowing suspects Ralph Kasambara, Pika Manondo and even suspected shooter MacDonald Kumwembe.
Lutepo has since said that that ex Deputy Inspector General Nelson Bophani forced him to implicate Kasambara, a former Justice Minister because Kasambara was also incriminating the cashgate convict.
The attempt on Mphwiyo’s life led to the discovery of the cashgate scandal. A forensic exercise by British auditors established that K24 billion of public funds was stolen between April and September 2013.
