Nkhatabay District Hospital seeks help as it has started growing maize on its 4.5 hectares of land in a bid to feed patients using its own resources, Malawi24 can confirm.

Now a farm?;Nkhatabay hospital.

In an interview, Nkhatabay District Nursing officer, Boniface Ndovi said the facility plans to be cultivating maize on the field twice in a year to feed the hospital’s patients.

‘It is our own initiative but we are seeking help from well-wishers including the government. We have an arrangement with prison authorities here to provide manpower. As we speak, the maize is already grown and just awaits application of fertiliser. We plan to be cultivating twice in a year hence the need for a bore-hole,” said Ndovi.

Over the weekend, the District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Mkandawire had asked the minister of information Jappie Mhango to consider drilling a bore-hole and provide farm inputs to the facility.

Mkandawire made the plea when the information minister donated 100 bags of maize and 10 bags of beans to the hospital. During a similar function at Chitipa District Hospital, the information minister asked the Chitipa DHO and all other DHOs to emulate the example set by Nkhatabay District Hospital.

Atazikalima ndi akaidi kuchokela ku prison. Ok?

  6. In prisons the prisoners do the farming and who is going to do in hospitals the patients or nurses and who will finance the farming already they can’t supply food or drugs in the hospitals

  7. When we talk of development, it seeks realising one’s capacity. If the hospital officials have extended their capacity to develop, let the development flourish. I do not think this is a bad idea. If you have a problem with this, Malawi I a democratic nation, the powers any government officials hold is in trust, Malawi 24 comment can not directly change the decisions made in the Ministry. You have the freedom to let the ministry of Health hear your critics about the move the hospital officials in have commenced. Otherwise this is what Malawi needs, to extend capacity

  8. Its Good Idea Yes- But My Fear The Hospital Now Will be under ministry of agriculture than ministry of health and be concerned with agricultural production than health service delivery. My plea why cannt you work with the prison department so that you share production cost? For example the prison to offer labour and agricultural expertise and you shoulder the other and share the yield.

  10. Most Prisoners are not fully utilized who could be used to grow maize for Government use.A lot of money is spent on maintaining Prisoners. In Zambia Prison Service is flat out in commercial farming livestock management and Engineering.Every District has Pricon and Prisoners use them

    2. You Are Very Right In 1994 Malawi dug her grave of changing things for the sake of changing. Kamuzu was supposesd to be asked why he was doing somethings like even accepting gifts from the poor. What was happening those gifts were being shared in xools, hospital, barracks, police camps and many other. Today none of us could accept to contribute direct to hospitals but that time we were doing the same to kamuzu and we were benefiting as well. Myp training was part of this where by attachments were done in different farms either press agriculture, general farming or chamwavi group. All the yields were shared in many places like hospitals. Please malawians we should not wait foreigners to donate to us even toilets. Thus Why they want to donate to us evn their faith, culturea and freedoms. Lets sit down and plan as malawians not DPP,MCP, UDF,PP, and others. Our friends in china sat down and now are rich.

    1. Welengani article yo musanafunse. Ati akayidi ndiwo adzikalima. Its an agreement between the hospital and the prison

  15. Don,t fool our DPP Government please what Hon. Mhango says in Chitipa he was sleeping dreaming this may let him lose the job

  16. That’s the way to go, let go to the basics, doesn’t matter how you do it. whether you use your ground workers, or prisoners, its your business but let us do something with what we have

  17. Who told you that prisoners don’t want to own their food?
Don’t complicate things here leave the prisoners and find your own means of farming and feed the patients if you think nurses can do farming plus nursing the sick.
