A Nigerian woman identified as Annie Nwozuzu Chinyere is in Malawi Police custody in connection with the killing of Agnes Katengeza who was found dead in her car on September 24, a day after she was reported missing.
Chinyere was reportedly arrested on September 27 after Police tracking Katengeza’s cellphone calls were led to the woman’s house.
“When the police wanted to interview this lady, she behaved suspicious to the point of dodging the police. It is this behaviour that motivated the police to detain her cellphones,” a source told Nation Online.
Chinyere’s lawyer Chrispine Mndala has also told Nation Online that Chinyere was indeed arrested and police confiscated her phones.
Mndala added that the suspect appeared before court Lilongwe Magistrate Court on Thursday where she applied for bail and the court is yet to set date to make a ruling.
However, National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya has claimed that the police have not made any arrest over Katengeza’s murder.
Katengeza, an employee of the Reserve Bank of Malawi, left home on September 23 to sell merchandise (INUKA products) and did not specify exactly where she was going. She was found bundled in the trunk of her vehicle in Lilongwe’s Area 47 on September 24.
The revelation about the arrest of the Nigerian woman come days after police on Friday arrested Lester Maganga, a personal assistant to Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu, over the murder of Allan Wittika who was also found dead in his car in Lilongwe last month. It is alleged that Maganga and Wittika were fighting over a woman.
