A spot check by Malawi24 in Blantyre has found that most filling stations visited had no fuel, forcing motorists to search for alternative stations.
At some stations, motorists have formed queues while waiting for fuel deliveries, with some spending hours hoping that fuel would arrive.
Other filling stations have temporarily closed their pumps after running out of fuel.
Speaking to Malawi24 on condition of anonymity, one fuel attendant said the station had run dry and was waiting for a new supply.
“We are waiting for fuel at the moment. We are running dry,” said the attendant as workers marked the pumps with red tape to indicate that fuel was unavailable.
The shortage has left motorists moving between filling stations in search of fuel.
