Victor Musowa, Member of Parliament for Mulanje Bale under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has been elected as the First Deputy Speaker of Malawi’s National Assembly.
Musowa garnered a total of 134 votes, securing a commanding lead in the election.
He defeated Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who received 60 votes.
Catherine Mzumala of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) trailed with 24 votes.
Musowa’s victory reflects strong support from MPs and positions him as a key figure in the leadership of the National Assembly.
Observers note that the results highlight the DPP’s influence in Parliament and the confidence placed in Musowa to assist in maintaining order and facilitating legislative processes.
With his election, Musowa is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting the Speaker and ensuring that parliamentary debates are conducted with fairness and transparency.
The outcome also marks a significant moment for the Mulanje Bale constituency, as its representative takes on a prominent national leadership position.
