Malawi’s national women’s football team, The Scorchers, has been promised a token of 1.5 million kwacha each, in recognition of their qualification to the 2026 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President, Fleetwood Haiya, praised the team’s dedication and hard work, saying, “The deepest appreciation goes to the players and the technical panel for their remarkable dedication, discipline, and hard work.”

Haiya further stated that FAM has decided to standardize equal pay for The Scorchers and the national men’s team, The Flames, as they all represent Malawi with pride and excellence.

The Scorchers secured their WAFCON spot after defeating Angola 2-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, with Faith Chimzimu scoring a brace in the 80th and 81st minutes.

The team has now joined Morocco, Zambia, Tanzania, Algeria, Nigeria, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Cape Verde, South Africa, and Senegal in the tournament.
