The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) says it is projecting a monthly collection of around K26 billion at the Mwanza border following the completion of a one-stop-bordered post facility.
MRA deputy commissioner Henry Ngutwa said this on Wednesday during a handover ceremony for the facility.
Ngutwa disclosed that the authority has been collecting K24 billion per month, but due to the trade facilitation, the performance is expected to improve.
“The completion of this facility we are hoping to increase revenue collection from K24 billion to around K26 billion a month. And this new facility on our part will speed up processes as well as boost revenue,” he explained.
Speaking after handing over the facility, Minister of Trade Sosten Gwengwe noted that such initiatives are a game changer for the country’s trade activities as well as the economy.
He then called on staff members of various agencies to be efficient in their work of clearing goods.
Gwengwe added that having all the agencies at one post has the potential to reduce the time people spend when clearing their goods.
The post, which consists of agencies like Immigration, and MRA, is under the Southern Africa Trade Connectivity Project and the project has cost K5.5 billion.
