Angry people at Wenya in Chitipa district have killed a man for allegedly robbing a businessman of 6 million kwacha and a motorcycle.

Chitipa Police Station Public Relations Officer Sub-Inspector Gladwell Simwaka said the incident occurred on October 23, 2023 at 08:00 hours at Jembya area along Chitipa-Nthalire road.

According to Simwaka, the victim has been identified as James Mwalilino of Mwangolera village, in the area of Paramount Chief Kyungu in Karonga district.

“Reports indicate that James Mwalilino and his two friends, Astone Salot Ng’ambi, 25, and Luka Kanyika, 24, attacked Tiyegze Kaira, a businessman at Wenya trading centre and his son at Jembya on their way to Chitipa and robbed them of 6 million kwacha and a King lion motorcycle they were riding,” Simwaka said.

Simwaka added that the suspects were using Kinglion motorcycle and were armed with panga knives.

Soon after the incident, the victims informed their relatives and they mobilised themselves, followed and arrested the robbers.

Police officers from Wenya police unit rushed to the scene where they managed to rescue the suspects and recovered the stolen motorcycle and money.

Unfortunately, James Mwalilino was heavily assaulted by angry people and died on the spot and the angry people also burnt to ashes the suspects’ motorcycle they were using.

Postmortem conducted at Chitipa District Hospital showed dead was due to head injuries.

Simwaka further said the two other suspects have been arrested and will appear in court soon to answer robbery charges.

Astone Salot Ng’ambi hails from Mwenegamba village in Senior Chief Mwaulambia and Luka Kanyika is from Chisenga village in the area of Senior Chief Mwenewenya in Chitipa district.

Meanwhile, police in the district have warned people against taking the law into their own hands.
