Malumbo Harawa emerges overall winner of Airtel Zilimwaife

Malumbo Harawa has emerged as the overall winner of Airtel Zilimwaife campaign and has been awarded K12 million for fixing crucial medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators and autoclave machines for free in hospitals.

Harawa was announced as the overall winner at the grand finale event on 4th July 2023 at Bingu International Conference Center, BICC, in Lilongwe.

He already received K4 million from Airtel in the early stages of the Zilimwaife campaign and the additional K12 million means he has received a total of K16 million.

“I thank Airtel for the ZiliMwaIfe campaign because it has boosted my capacity to reach many communities. The project we are doing aims to help communities, so when this kind of support comes, we know that we can extend our reach to even more communities,” said Harawa.

The other outstanding Malawians in the top five of the campaign are: Juma Ali who was awarded an additional K3 million for developing a student grading app; Elias Matope who was awarded K5 million for supporting over 800 learners with shoes; Chimwemwe Mwenefumbo who was awarded K7.5 million for generating his own electricity and water pump using local materials; and Stanislaus Sakwiya who was awarded K10 million for developing the MlimiPay mobile app used by over 870 farmers to save for their farming inputs.

The ZiliMwaIfe campaign, which ran from September 2022 to 4 June 2023, received thousands of nominations from across the country, featuring stories of courage, creativity and compassion from Malawians who have made a positive difference in their own lives and the lives of others.

The campaign awarded 16 individuals’, who each received various cash prizes from the K100.5 million and whose stories were promoted on Airtel Malawi’s website, social media channels and various broadcasting media outlets.

The judges then proceeded to select their Top 5 individuals which were also voted by the public and received additional cash prizes and recognition at the grand finale event on 4th July 2023 at Bingu International Conference Center, BICC, in Lilongwe.

The finalists and the other awardees were congratulated by Airtel’s Managing Director, Charles Kamoto who lauded them and all the nominees for their extraordinary achievements.

Kamoto said: “We are proud of what we have achieved together, and we look forward to continuing to inspire, motivate and uplift Malawi with campaigns such as this. Remember, it’s in us to do better for ourselves and others, ZiliMwaIne, ZiliMwaInu, ZiliMwaIfe.”

He added that the ZiliMwaIfe campaign aligns with Airtel Malawi’s new tagline: ‘A Reason to Imagine’ which is a promise to Malawians that Airtel is here to enable their dreams, passions, and efforts.

“ZiliMwaIfe has been one of Airtel’s key enablers to do that by helping you fulfil your dreams and passion for others, and for your communities,” said Kamoto.

The Managing Director also thanked the team, the judges, the production partners, the media and the customers for their involvement and support in making the campaign a success.

ZiliMwaIfe Chief Judge Wisdom Chimgwede said: “As judges, we have had the privilege of hearing stories from these extraordinary people, and we have all been inspired by their courage, compassion, and creativity. Their stories are reminders that we all have the power to make a difference in our communities.”

“We would especially also like to encourage women to come out and share their stories and their valiant works in their communities, as we believe women have so much to offer and so much to gain from being a part of the change we want to see.”
