The Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) Malawi Limited says a leakage on a bypass pipe at Nkula B has forced the company to shut down a machine with capacity of 20 Megawatts.

According to the company, if left unrepaired, the leakage could lead to flooding of the powerhouse.

“Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) wishes to inform all stakeholders and the general public that we have leakage on bypass pipe on machine number 4 at Nkula B that has a potential of flooding the powerhouse if not repaired in time. However there is no reason to panic as the situation is under control.

“We wish to further inform the public that the leakage of the bypass pipe has nothing to do with with the system shutdown that occurred earlier today (Monday) at 02:04. Currently, others from Nkula B are online and generating electricity,” said EGENCO statement.

The electricity generation company further said that the repair works will require the shutting down of the whole power station to dewater tunnel to enable engineers carry the repair works.

The company has since quashed rumours making rounds that it is already experiencing flash floods in the powerhouse at Nkula B power Station.

The rumours started on Monday following the nationwide power outage.
