Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) says it experienced a system shutdown which led to nationwide power outage at 2:04pm today.

According to ESCOM, while efforts to restore power started 30 minutes later, the system remained unstable as EGENCO reported an emergency at Nkula B Power Station.

Today’s nationwide power outage comes days after another nationwide blackout hit Malawi on 26 November.

That shutdown was caused by a technical problem, according to ESCOM.

System shutdowns causing nationwide blackouts have occurred at least five times this year, including in August when a nationwide blackout lasted 12 hours.

Malawi is also experiencing low electricity supply following damage at Kapichira Power Plant. Due to the damage, ESCOM customers do not have power for at least six hours per day.

The Lazarus Chakwera administration promised Malawians that these daily blackouts will end in December this year.
