Vice President Saulos Chilima says ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) would not have won the 2014 polls without him as its running mate.
Speaking at a UTM rally at Chule Primary School Ground in Dedza this afternoon, Chilima said the DPP should be grateful that he helped the party to win the polls.
The DPP has been demanding Chilima’s resignation saying he has not been not working since he dumped the ruling party in June and did not show respect to the party which put him in his position.
However, Chilima – who was Managing Director of Airtel before joining politics – said he had a nice job and the DPP kept sending people to his office to persuade him to become Mutharika’s runningmate. He said he is only grateful to God for giving him the position.
He added that some of the DPP officials and State House workers making noise now were not there when he used his skills to engineer a victory for the DPP in 2014.
“At every DPP rally they claim that I am an ungrateful person DPP, what should I be thankful for? The DPP would not have won without me.
“I am not indebted to the DPP. I found you (DPP) in opposition and you would not have won the elections without me,” said Chilima angrily.
On DPP’s claims that he was an “airtime salesman” who became popular because of the party, Chilima said he used the sales skills to sell Mutharika in 2014 and this time he is marketing UTM and his candidacy.
In his speech, Chilima also condemned the DPP government for attempting to block UTM’s registration saying the court battles over the past week were shameful and a waste of Judges’ time.
He added that registration of a political party should be straightforward and not something worth celebrating.
