The credibility of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to conduct free and fair elections in 2019 is in tatters following reports that a laptop with crucial voter registration data is missing.
Reports reaching Malawi24 indicate that a laptop from registration kit 1241 used in the voter registration exercise in Mzuzu went missing between October 23 and 24.
According to MEC officials , the laptop vanished into thin air between Katoto Secondary School in Mzuzu and Chitipa where the officials went for the ongoing registration exercise.
It is understood that the laptop had crucial crucial voter registration data, raising heightened fears on the presence of a well-calculated scheme set up to the 2019 Malawi Tripartite Elections.
But MEC was yet to comment on the matter as of press time.
Last week ,it was revealed that a missing voter registration kit was found in the neighbouring Mozambique, raising questions among social commentators and political parties who think the kit was stolen by people geared to rig the 2019 election.
Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima has on several occasions hinted at the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) plotting to rig 2019 tripartite elections. MEC has rubbished the allegations as “shameful and unfortunate”.
