The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has described 2017 as a bad year following the death of soldiers in an accident in Mzimba district.

According to MDF commander Griffin Supuni Phiri, the accident that claimed lives of over twenty soldiers was a big loss to the family of men and women in uniform.

Griffin Supuni Phiri,
Supuni Phiri: It was a bad year for us.

“It was a bad year for us, we had a terrible accident, which happened in Mzimba, we lost three instructors and nineteen up and coming soldiers,” said Phiri.

He further expressed sadness after noting that many soldiers were lost in the Mzimba accident and not in peacekeeping missions.

“This has never happened in Malawi Defence Force, in fact it pains me a lot because we have been sending soldiers to peace keeping missions and we don’t experience that loss,” he added.

Phiri however noted that there were also notable achievements such as discipline and confidence that the public has in Malawi soldiers.

In November, twenty-one soldiers got killed in Mzimba after their truck overturned when they were coming back from training.
