The government of Malawi has pledged to support efforts to revitalise the tea industry in the country.
This is according to the country’s Minister of Civic Education, Culture and Community Development Cecilia Chazama.
Chazama made the remarks at a Malawi Tea 2020 annual progress meeting in the commercial city of Blantyre.
Under the Malawi Tea 2020 initiative, players in the industry are planning to rejuvenate tea production by the year 2020.
The minister said tea is the largest private sector employer, employing directly over 50 thousand people and supporting over 1.5 million people in the country.
Chazama continued to say that government is committed to reducing the challenges the tea sector faces to achieve its objectives.
