A Somali national was on Tuesday arrested for attempting to obtain a Malawian passport at Immigration Headquarters in Blantyre.

According to immigration files, the foreigner whose name is Hassan Mayow Muse, went to the office with passport application forms that were duly stamped by Blantyre District Commissioner (DC).

The foreigner is said to have entered the country on Saturday through unchartered routes from the Republic of South Africa with the assistance of a Malawian lady, Thokozani Kanzingeni from Kanzingeni village, T/A Kwataine in Ntcheu district.

The Somali national is expected to appear before court to answer two counts of illegal entry contrary to Section 21(1) of the Immigration Act of the Laws of Malawi and false declaration (to be a Malawian), contrary to section 327 of the Penal Code.

The Malawian lady will answer two charges of aiding and abetting unlawful entry, contrary to section 36(1)(a) of the Immigration Act and false declaration.

Meanwhile, the Immigration Department is investigating the matter further to establish how a major stakeholder, the DC’s office, stamped the applicant’s forms.
