A two-vehicle collision involving a Toyota Hilux and a coaster on Saturday killed four people in Dowa district.
According to Dowa Police spokesperson Richard Kaponda, the accident happened at Sole village near Chankhungu Trading Centre in Dowa district.
Kaponda told Malawi24 that a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota coaster driven by William Phiri and Lucius Yohane respectively were travelling in opposite directions on the Salima-Lilongwe road with passengers on board in both vehicles.
“Upon arrival at Sole village along Salima-Lilongwe road near Chankhungu trading centre the two drivers failed to pass one another properly and as a result the cars collided,” said Kaponda.
Following the impact, four passengers from the Toyota Coaster died, three on the spot and one while receiving treatment at Chezi Health Centre.
“Among the four , three people have been identified as Pilirani Leonard, Lupiya Michael and Junior Chiunjika all from Bowe Trading Centre under Traditional Authority Chakhaza in Dowa while one deceased is yet to be identified,” Kaponda told Malawi24.
Some passengers from both vehicles escaped with serious injuries and were referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) for treatment.
All the four dead bodies were taken to Dowa District Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
