Noel Mkandawire dead at 39

Death has been announced of former Civo Service United, Escom United and Flames forward Noel Mkandawire.

According to information sourced by Malawi24, the 39-year-old passed on at Mzimba District Hospital on Saturday afternoon after a long battle with a liver problem which was causing his stomach to swell. His left leg was also swollen with a possible cancerous diagnosis.

Nicknamed “Amfumu” because of his dribbling ability, Mkandawire led Escom to their first ever TNM Super League title when he was signed from Civo Service.

He was also part of the Malawi National Football team during the days of Kim Splidsboel, Yasin Osman and Kinnah Phiri.

His condition worsened earlier this year and was transferred to his home district where he has passed on.

Burial arrangements will be announced later but he is likely to be buried on Monday at Euthini in the same district of Mzimba.

    We should blame a system where there is no welfare fund for players in clubs and the national teams. Players have suffered alot because sports leadership only promise and lie about the social welfare fund for players but they won’t introduce it. Look at Emma Mzagada, she has been sick and was looking for funds for medical treatment but no sports governing bodies helped her. This is sad.

    Still, let sports players demand these social welfare funds in their club and national team contracts where there has to be a percentage cut from gate takings for their welfare fund. They should buy life policies with insurance companies or for national team players, government and FAM/NAM must comeup with something.

    Still, even football or netball players must invest in life policies with the little they get monthly for the future. But its up to players for all teams. They can even tell their clubs or national team to put this in place before plsying for them. They can even strike if this is not in place. They should know their price and their worth……

    However, the whole player administration thing is sick in Malawi. Pathetic
