Malawi’s minister of finance Goodall Gondwe has disclosed that he misinformed the nation that the treasury had already released funds for payment of teachers’ arrears and leave grants.
Gondwe on Tuesday informed Parliament that treasury already released funds to district councils for teachers to be paid.
The minister added that the district councils were to decide on when they were to disburse the money.
But now Gondwe has admitted that he misinformed the House saying he misunderstood officials from his ministry.
“We start with an apology because I misunderstood my officials on what point they were, I thought the payment was made, the process is much longer than I thought,” said Gondwe.
Currently, teachers in Malawi are staging a nationwide strike in demand of unpaid arrears and leave grants.
