Just like St Stephen in the Bible, a 73 year-old woman has been stoned to death after being suspected to have bewitched her granddaughter.

The deceased, Esmie Andrew, is reported to have been stoned to death by an angry mob who suspected the woman of killing her granddaughter Nyamazao Mlangali.

Confirming to Malawi24, Blantyre Police Assistant spokesperson Andrew Mayawo said the deceased’s husband reported the matter to police.

“Actually the husband Mulanje Khanawe aged 76 reported that the wife was stoned to death after people suspected her to be a witch,” said Mayawo.

He added that the police rushed to the scene and arrested five people suspected to have had a hand in the murder.

Mayawo further condemned the killing arguing that suspecting someone to be a witch is unlawful in Malawi.

Postmortem at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) revealed that the woman died due to severe head injuries. Esmie hailed from Mbala village, Tradition Authority (TA) Somba in Blantyre.
