The students of University of Livingstonia (Unilia) Ekwendeni campus have formed an organisation called Centre for Promotion of Tertiary Education that is aimed at empowering youth to attain tertiary education for a better future.
Speaking to Malawi24, spokesperson for the group Madalitso Mwenda said the Unilia students started the organisation upon observing that young people are not being encouraged to access tertiary education.
“Tertiary education is the key to the growth of the country’s social economic development. The organisation is planning to introduce among others girls guide programmes to persuade them to do tertiary education,” said Mwenda.
According to Mwenda, the organisation is also aimed at seeing vulnerable people accessing tertiary education.
“As you know that the right to education is for all, the organisation also looks at vulnerable people who are failing to access tertiary education to realise their dreams. The students are planning various approaches to convince youth across the country about the significance of attaining tertiary education,” he said.
The organisation is currently composed of students from Unilia Ekwendeni campus but discussions are underway to rope in students from Unilia Laws campus.
The launch of the organisation was spiced by performances from Martse, Dali and Kell Kay.
