Police in Mangochi say there has been a reduction in cases of robbery, murder, and rape in the district.
Mangochi police station deputy spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi confirmed the development in an interview with Malawi24.
“From January to August this year, the station has registered 16 cases of robbery compared to 40 cases recorded during the same period last year,” she said.
Daudi added that during the same period last year, the station registered four murder cases while this year three murder cases have been recorded from January to August.
“It also worth noting that there has been a reduction in rape cases as we have recorded only one case compared to three last year,” said Daudi.
She however said cases of defilement have increased from 16 recorded last year to 21 this year.
The police spokesperson claimed that the reduction in incidences of some crimes in the district is because there is a good working relationship between police and the community.
She also saluted police officers in the district for working day and night to reduce crime.
Daudi then encouraged the public to continue giving the police tip offs about criminal activities and to avoid taking the law into their hands when they catch suspects.
In another development, Police in Limbe police have arrested 34 people suspected of terrorising areas surrounding the town.
Limbe police Assistant Public Relations officer Widson Nhlane said the suspects have been arrested for various offences including robbery with violence, theft, being found in possession of cannabis sativa, burglary and being found in possession of property suspected to have been stolen.
According to Nhlane, the exercise was conducted in areas which are under Limbe police station jurisdiction.
