A court in Mangochi district has fined two men for being found in possession of medical drugs without licence.
The men were found with drugs worth K250,000 but were ordered to pay K150,000 or in default to serve three years in jails.
Presenting facts in court, Prosecutor Sub Inspector Maxwell Mwaluka told the court that the two Atikeni Atwabi 52, and Levisoni Maende 65, were arrested on Monday during a sweeping exercise aimed at reducing crimes in Mangochi district.
“They were found with medical drugs without licence which is contrary to section 45 as read with section 65 of Pharmacy Medicines and Poisons Board Act,” Mwaluka told the court.
Passing judgement, first grade magistrate Ronald M’bwana said that although they voluntarily pleaded guilty, the two men still deserved stiff penalties so as to let others get a lesson.
He then ordered the two to pay K150, 000 or in default to serve 3 years jail term.
Atwabi hails from Kambulire village while Maende hails from Mtanga village both from Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi district.
