Malawi Police officers in Dedza district are keeping in jail a primary school teacher for raping a pupil.
Dedza police deputy publicist Constable Cassim Manda identified the suspect as Chifundo Felix, 26, who was recruited under the ODL 3 programme.
According to Manda, after being posted at a school in the district Felix began sexually abusing the young girl who is a pupil in his classroom.
On Thursday last week around midnight, the suspect went to the house of the girl and convinced her to sleep at his house.
However, the girl’s parents later noticed that their child was not in the house and they began looking for her. Some community members tipped them to search at the house of the teacher.
The parents ambushed the house of the suspect and when the girl tried to escape she fell in their hands. However, the suspect managed to escape the raid.
The matter was reported to Chafumbwa police unit and the suspect was later arrested.
According to Manda, Felix is in police custody waiting to answer the charge of defilement which is contrary to section 138 sub section of the penal code.
“To would be offenders, having carnal knowledge with a girl under the age of sixteen is an offence whether with consent or without consent. Remember the consent of young person is always immaterial in our laws,” said constable Manda.
Chifundo Felix hails from Wilinda village, Traditional Authority Chilikumwendo in Dedza district.
