Mphwiyo shooting Sentence: Kasambara slapped with 13 year jail term as Manondo, Kumwembe get 26 years

Judge Michael Mtambo has sentenced Macdonald Kumwembe and Pika Manondo to 26 years in prison each while Malawi’s ex Justice Minister Kasambara 13 years in charges related to the shooting of former Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo in 2013.

Kasambara’s fellow convicts in the case, Pika Manondo and McDonald Kumwembe, have been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for attempted murder and 11 years for conspiracy to murder Mphwiyo.

The two will serve a total of 26 years in prison since their sentences will run consecutively.

Last month, Lilongwe High Court judge Mtambo indicated that on the charge of attempted murder, he had found the two accused Pika Manondo and Macdonald Kumwembe guilty of the charge.

In the second charge of conspiring to commit murder, the judge also found the two plus the former minister guilty.

Meanwhile, the defence is asking for bail in view of the fact that the three are appearing against conviction but Director of Public Prosecution(DPP) is objecting to bail.
