The Midima magistrate court in the commercial city of Blantyre has sentenced a 34 year-old man to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour for raping a six year-old girl.

According to police prosecutor Owen Kamanga, the convict Sipho Kankhomba raped the little girl who is his neighbour’s daughter.

CourtThe prosecutor said the sexual abuse became known after the mother of the girl observed that the child was walking in an unusual way.

Kamanga said the mother later asked the girl as to what happened to her and the girl revealed that she had been raped by Kankhomba.

The child said the paedophile called her to his house where he raped her.

He then gave her a K100 note so that she should not reveal the sexual abuse. Medical report at Chiradzulu hospital showed that the girl was indeed raped. This led to the arrest of the rapist on charges of defilement.

Passing his judgment on the case, magistrate Mangawa Makhalira said the country’s courts has a responsibility of protecting girls in the country.

He then slapped the convict with 14 years imprisonment with hard labour arguing that this should be a lesson to all would-be offenders.

Kankhomba hails from the area of Traditional Authority Nsamala in Malawi’s Balaka district.
