Following the conviction of former Minister of Justice Ralph Kasambara who was once described as a mafia by the country’s former President late Bingu wa Mutharika, social commentators have taken to the internet to make their opinions heard on the conviction.
As usual, it has been a varied response ranging from shock, satisfaction, anger and humour.
A meme that has gone viral shows Kasambara on a phone with the words written ‘Major 1…Nyambalotu’. It is an apparent reference to the association that Kasambara had with South African based flamboyant Prophet Shepherd Bushiri who is self-titled Major 1.
It appears the sarcastic humour has mostly been targeted at exploiting the link between Bushiri and Kasambara as a more crude one has a photo of Bushiri with the words that ‘Sorry Kasambara, we do not perform miracles we do tricks and we could not do it for you on this one’.
The social commentators on the other hand appeared for example on the Malawi24 Facebook page to react to the ruling.
One person took it personal, commenting:
“You reap what you sow, I remember when he was the AG during Bingu time he made me and my cousin suffer. God fights our battles.’
“No matter who you are or how educated you are…the long arm of the law will one day find you and justice will be served. One by one you are going down slowly but surely. This is a big win for Malawi’s Judicial System….Keep it up,” another remarked.
“This is not yet over, the government will keep spending money on this guy. Do not forget that this guy fights till the last drop,” another wrote.
