Amnesty International has taken Malawi to task for its lack of commitment to end albino attacks following the brutal attack on a 51 year-old albino woman whose hand was chopped off by thugs.

The woman, Lucia Kainga, was attacked together with her husband on Saturday in Chitipa district by four men.

Reacting on the attack, Amnesty International has demanded Malawi government to investigate the attack and to bring to book the culprits.

The international human rights organisation has further expressed shock over Malawi’s failure to curb the barbaric acts against people with albinism.

“Authorities must investigate the gruesome attack on Saturday on a woman with albinism and bring those suspected of the crime to justice.

“Just last month, the Malawian authorities assured Amnesty International that they are stepping up their efforts to prevent and punish these superstition-based attacks,” said Muleya Mwananyanda, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Southern Africa in a statement made available to Malawi24.

Meanwhile, police have arrested Joseph Ndimbwa in connection to the attack on the woman.

In June Amnesty International released a report titled “We are not animals to be hunted or sold”: Violence and discrimination against people with albinism in Malawi” which shed more light on the crimes against people with albinism in Malawi.

The report showed that women and children with albinism are particularly vulnerable to killings, and are sometimes targeted by their own close relatives.

After the report was published, Malawi government said Amnesty International must stay away from issues that are happening in the country.
