Burglar jailed for four years

The Midima Senior Resident Magistrate Mangawa Makhalira has convicted Afiki Maison to four years in prison with hard labour for burglary and theft.

According to assistant public relations officer for Limbe police Widson Nhlane, the 22 year-old together with his accomplice broke into the house of a certain family in Kanjedza Township.

CourtThe two stole cash and items valued at K2.1million.

The items which were stolen are a desktop computer, video camera, mobile phones, camera stand, plates, curtains and 12,000 cash.

After investigations, police arrested Maison on 1 December 2015 and charged him with theft and burglary.

Burglary is contrary to section 309 of the penal code while theft is contrary to section 278 of the penal code.

In court, Maison pleaded guilty and asked the court to exercise leniency when passing judgement because he has three children who depend on him as a breadwinner.

However, magistrate Mangawa Makhalira said this was a serious offence and the criminal deserved a stiffer punishment to deter others from committing the same offence.

The magistrate then sentenced Maison to 4 years imprisonment for burglary and theft.

Maison hails from Mulambala village T/A Mlolo in Nsanje district.
