Angry villagers in Balakasi village in the area of Traditional Authority Liwonde in Machinga on Tuesday morning severely beat a police officer and two other people who they suspected to be involved in albino abductions.

PoliceEastern region police public relations officer Sergeant Otilia Kumanga said she only recognizes two suspects but villagers revealed that the third suspect is a police officer.

The police officer has been identified as sub-inspector Chitsulo of Balaka police station while the other two suspects are Kafuche Banda who is a businessman at Majiga in Balaka district and Blackson Mwale who is a teacher at Mohale in Balaka.

According to Kumanga, the villagers became suspicious of the three after they found them in possession of panga knives and money amounting to K900, 000.

The villagers said the three suspects were seen moving up and down the village early in the morning on Tuesday after they had parked their car parked in the area, a development that raised suspicions among community members since the suspects were new in the village.

Later, the villagers caught the three and it was revealed that they were looking for an albino with an aim to kidnap.

The villagers beat the suspects before handing them to police.

The development comes barely days after police in the region vehemently denied reports that some police officers are aiding the abduction of people with albinism.
