Cochrane-Dyet was expelled from Malawi in 2011 following a leaked diplomatic telegram in which he referred to Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika as an autocrat.

In retaliation, Mutharika declared Mr. Cochrane-Dyet who had been head of the UK diplomatic mission to Malawi from 2009 as persona non grata. He was given 48 hours to leave the country.

Reports in Zambia indicate that Cochrane-Dyet who replaces to James Thornton is expected to take up his new post in April.
