SA based Malawian men fuelling school dropout rates in Mzimba

A study conducted by Plan Malawi in Mzimba has revealed that Malawian men who are based in South Africa are contributing to high school dropouts among girls in some areas in the district.

This was revealed at Mbawa primary school in TA M’mbelwa where Plan Malawi conducted a march for community leaders to encourage pupils at the school to concentrate on their studies.

Community leaders in the area had expressed worry with the high number of girls who never complete their primary school.

A study by Plan Malawi shows that girls in the district get married as early as 13 years of age because of poverty.

According to one of the facilitators, Canaan Shunga, most of the girls have been cheated that they will go to South Africa by men from the area.

The girls are also promised large sums of money hence they get easily enticed and they just get married.

“We urge our rich brothers and those living in diaspora, especially in South Africa, to stop marrying our young daughters. They come to our villages and pay huge sums of money to parents of these young girls and marry them. Later on they go back to South Africa and dump our sisters,” claimed Shunga.

Research also revealed that it is very rare to see men living in the communities marrying young girls.

According to Plan, some parents also force their girls to get married after receiving money and cattle from men hence there are many contributing factors from parents, girls themselves, and the communities they live in.

  14. Am from Mzimba myself,really there is unemployment problem not in Malawi ,even in RSA where some of our brothers and sisters are jobless. The issue of the matter here is that our daughters and sons seem not to have keen intrest in persuing their education because what bangs in their minds is going to RSA upon seeing those who have been there. so what Plan Malawi is saying is not stopping people from seeking greener pasture but it is encouraging us to send our children to school so that when they go to RSA they should be able to read and write .
