Lazarus Chakwera

…accused of taking the party ‘as his’

Days after he got criticized by some party officials for apologizing for the atrocities that the party’s father, late Hastings Kamuzu Banda did to Malawians, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader, Lazarus Chakwera has landed himself in fresh trouble.

A source close to the party hierarchy says that some MCP top officials told Chakwera to step down for what they claim as failure ‘to manage the party and to respect the party’s constitution.’

Close sources who have been speaking to Malawi24 reporters in Lilongwe revealed that some top officials are on the verge of making an official order to oust Chakwera.

“You see, everything in the party is intact. All structures have no problem but Chakwera is failing to manage the party. More to this, he hasn’t been leading in line with the laws that the party follows,” said the source who did not want to be named.

The ‘faction’ which says is working “for the good” of the party claim that if left to lead the party, Chakwera will surely channel the former ruling party to its deathbed.

‘’We are eyeing to win the polls in 2019, but with this way of leadership, we will have a mountain to climb,’’ says the source.

The officials also said that they still wonder why Chakwera has remained mum on the brutality that the party’s Administrative Secretary, Potiphar Chidaya, and other party officials suffered in Blantyre.

This comes barely days after chairpersons of the party across Malawi also sent a strong warning to Chakwera over what they claim to be “nepotism” by their leader.

‘’It’s sad that after we complained of favouritism, he (Chakwera) is still favouring the Central Region. But for us to win in the elections, we will need votes from the whole country and not one region alone. Our fellow party officials in other regions wonder why most managerial posts have been given to people from the Central Region,’’ said the source.

Malawi24 understands that the top posts which have been given to people from Lilongwe include Administrative Secretary, Treasurer General, Deputy Treasurer General and Director of Elections.

As we went to press, MCP was yet to respond to our reporters on the same, but recent media reports have seen the party’s Public Relations Officer Alekeni Menyani throwing calls to the bin.
