Malawi Police in Machinga district last week arrested a 23 year-old woman for stealing K751,425 belonging to Kanthumkhama village bank.

Machinga police confirmed the incident and identified the suspect as Elizabeth Mbewe who was until her arrest an executive committee member of Kanthunkhama village bank.

Machinga police spokesperson Davie Sulumba said some shortages were noticed in the group’s account and the members agreed to scrutinise their transactions.

“They found out that some transactions were not in line with the rules of running the affairs of the bank and other transactions were not endorsed in their register,” said Sulumba. The suspect will soon be brought to book to answer charges of theft which is contrary to section 271 of the penal code.

Mbewe hails from Naphuti village in the area of Traditional Authority Chinguza in Machinga district.
