Medical assistant in custody for stealing drugs

Malawi Police in Dedza district are keeping a health worker behind bars for allegedly stealing medical drugs and other hospital supplies worth K202,000.

Dedza deputy police spokesperson Cassim Manda confirmed the development and identified the suspect as 49 year-old Gabriel Chinkonda.

Manda said the suspect stole the drugs from Chikuse Health Centre in the district. According to Manda, the stolen items included drugs such as Amoxylin and Athromycin as well as gloves and goose roll.

Chinkonda is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of theft by public servant which is contrary to section 286 of the penal code.

Chinkonda hails from Chitala village in the area of Traditional Authority Khombedza in Salima.
