Gift Manison, a 19 year-old Malawian man in Lilongwe city , has been sentenced to 15 months in prison with hard labour by the Dedza first magistrate court after being found guilty for the offence of trespassing on a burial place.
According to state prosecutor Sub-inspector Bauleni Namasani, the convict trespassed on a graveyard in the area of village headman Katsekaminga in Lilongwe where he stole a picture frame belonging to late Steve Chizala’s late mother.
In his judgement, first grade magistrate Symon Mwambo slapped the convict to 15 months in prison as a warning to would-be offenders.
Dedza deputy Police spokesperson Constable Cassim Manda said he is satisfied with the sentence.
“What the convict did was not only a breach of section 129 of the penal code but also a total breach of section 26 in chapter 4 of Malawi’s constitution,” Manda said.
Manison hails from Katsekaminga village, Traditional Authority Kamenyagwaza in Lilongwe.
