Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has called on government to abolish Malata -Cement subsidies arguing that funds should instead be channeled to Farm Input Subsidy Program (Fisp).
Speaking in the national assembly, MCP legislator for Dedza East Juliana Lunguzi called on government to add more funds to Fisp.
“In Malawi we haven’t reached a point of subsidising houses, we are very far on that. If we can have subsidies on production people can have money to build decent houses.
“As of now there is no food for the very sick people in public hospitals and the country is facing hunger situation, if more funds would have been channeled to production of food things can work,” said Lunguzi.
Malawi government, through the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, launched
Malata – Cement subsidy to provide decent houses to Malawians.
The programme which was approved by the National Assembly in the 2015/16 financial year is expected to use K7 billion.

It is de same people every year which should not have been the case. So if MCP says it (malata and cement subsidy) is not good for our economy but fisp they r just trying to divert our minds. I would say both have their pros and cons coz shelter is also a basic need a human being must have and they hav implications to our economy.

Power is derived from people, electorate or voters. If some people won election on promise of decent and affordable housing program let them run the program. If it fails people will vote them out. But if there is no money for the program, government will be forced to review the implementation process. They will have to go back to people and say, look guys, wait until we have money for that. This is simply about money. But housing is a very important for developing countries. Talk of poor like me. Those who are rich, oppulent and well to do may see the program useless. Remember UN sustainable development goals. Gender, climate change, fighting poverty, child mortality, shelter, decent clothes, food, basic education………. they are all very important and priorities as per UN goals.

Very intellectual idea honourable Lunguzi. What this government is doing, it’s like it has been put in a bottle so that it cannot further liberty its thinking capacity.It is very pathetic to see people in vast areas,struggling their lives for food while the government is diverting alot of money to Malata Subsidy Programme. This is the extreme typical sign of failure. They just think as if everything is good. They don’t visit the rural areas where the duty of the government needs to be shown. This pains me really.
In mature democracies gvt . takes note of such briliant ideas and go back to the drawing board and adjust their projects. But in Malawi such is taken as nonsense because only gvt. has the best ideas. But surprisingly if on the next day the same idea is brought by the donors and mind you these are young boys and girls from IMF and World Bank the whole government machinery trembles. What a shame. Malawi needs to do business unusual otherwise we are doomed with this mindset. Bravo Juliana for the courage. Look to God for more wisdom.
