Malawi Minister of Sports and Member of Parliament for Nkhatabay West constituency, Grace Chiumia says she is concerned with the number of girls who are getting married early in her constituency.
In the constituency especially in Chikhamba area, three girls aged between 14 and 15 got married within the last week.
Chiumia who is also Minister of Sports and Culture blamed lack of education infrastructure within the area for the situation and asked the community to mould bricks for construction of a school in order to minimise the practice.
She however asked the girls to go back to school and continue with their education.
In Malawi child marriages are closely linked to poverty since girls are often married-off while they are very young to improve their family’s financial status.
Many youths do better in education but they hav nothing to do becoz there is no job opportunities to be seen
