Dwangwa United have today registered their first win of the season after they came from behind to beat Azam Tigers 2-1 at Kamuzu stadium in Blantyre.

Jack Chiona canceled out Yamikani Chester’s opener in the 53rd minute before he scored Dwangwa United’s winner in the first minute of added time to help Dwangwa upset Azam Tigers.

The game started on an impressive note as both Azam Tigers were displaying good passing football. But it was Dwangwa United who started building strong momentum and looked brighter and could have taken the lead after six minutes when Kingsley Kapalamula poked his shot goalwards, only to be denied by the cross bar.

On 17 minutes, Bright Munthali could have put Azam Tigers ahead but he horribly sent his shot wide and three minutes later Munthali came close again but he headed Abraham Kamwendo’s free kick wide.

Despite seeing more of the ball, Dwangwa United struggled to break through, as they were playing at a sluggish pace and finding no space behind a compact Tigers defence mounted by Bonda Mpinganjira, Peter Mpulula, Peter Cholopi and Hickson Mwase.

As the game was heading towards the end of the first half, Yamikani Chester broke through the Dwangwa United defence and put Tigers ahead on the 40th minute of the first half.

After that goal Dwangwa United pressed for an equaliser but Tigers defended well and the first half ended 1 nil in Tigers’ favour.

After the break Dwangwa United continued from where they stopped in the first half as the were playing good attacking football with Jack China, Benson Manyozo, Victor Harawa and Josophat Kwasira starting the attacks from the centre.

Azam Tigers began building momentum as they started winning the battle in the centre but they lacked the scoring composure in front of goal.

Eight minutes after halftime Dwangwa United were awarded a free kick outside the 18 yard box and Jack Chiona made no mistake as he scored direct from the free kick and it was 1 all.

Shortly after that goal Dwangwa United coach McDonald Mtetemela introduced Chifundo Twawiha in the place of Patrick Macheso.

Whereas Azam Tigers responded to that goal by introducing Elia Munthali on the place of Abraham Kamwendo who was not ticking in the opening minutes of the second half.

After the one hour mark Bright Munthali again went close to putting Tigers back into the lead but his headed went wide.

The momentum seemed to be with Dwangwa United in the second half but it was Tigers who went close on several occasions but Dwangwa defended well.

As the game was going towards the end and looked to be settling for a draw Dwangwa United were awarded a free kick again outside of the box when Thomas Kalavina the Tigers goalminder fouled Chifundo Twawiha.

Chiona stepped up for the challenge once again and made no mistake when slotted his free kick into the bottom corner of Kalavina’s goal and the game ended 2-1 in favour of Dwangwa.

The result has moved Dwangwa United out of the relegation zone and they are now 13th on the log table.

After the game Azam Tigers coach Gerald Phiri conceded defeat and thanked his boys for displaying brilliant football whereas McDonald Mtetemera was happy with the result and said his boys played according to his instruction.
